Kyrie Kyrie (1999) for solo trombone was written for and is dedicated to George Dardess, as a gift on the occasion of his retirement. This work is a statement of faith, a work of intense anguish and resolution. The inspiration is taken from the opening movement of the mass, the Kyrie (“Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison”), a crying out for mercy to God. The work may be performed with much rubato, and the performer should try greatly to capture the anguish (the crying out of the Kyrie) and eventual peace (the cry for mercy answered) expressed throughout.
