Sonata (Neuheit Trompete) Five sonatas for brass instruments and piano. For trumpet in Bb (optional doubling on Flugelhorn) or trumpet in C. This work was commissioned by Professor James Watson for the brass faculty of the Royal Academy of Music. It was composed between August and September 2008. It is the fifth in a series of six works for brass composed between 2006 and 2009: sonatas for Bass Tuba and Piano (2006), Bass Trombone and Piano (2006), Tenor Trombone and Piano (2007), Horn in F and Piano (2008) and Sinfonia Concertante for Bass Tuba, Bass Trombone, Tenor Trombone, Horn, Trumpet Brass and Percussion (2009). The first performance of the Sonata was given on 21 October 2009 at the Royal Academy of Music, by James Woods Davison (to whom the work is dedicated) and Timothy End.
