Deep Blue The tuba version of Deep Blue was arranged by the composer for Les Neish, to premiere at ITEC 2012 in Linz, Austria. Originally scored for tenor saxophone & piano, Deep Blue was commissioned and funded by Alex Bradbury and dedicated to Australian saxophonist Erin Royer. Andy writes “Australia and its beautiful coast and surrounding seas holds a strange fascination for me. I imagined stunning underwater scenes when writing this piece of music; deep and murky waters, the sun shining into the shallower areas, fish suddenly darting past, silvery flashes of light, the unexpected around every corner, whilst time itself seems to be in slow motion”. The word ‘blue’ also conjures other images; in particular the colour itself, and also the association with jazz & blues. Deep Blue is both dark and light, ever-exploring, and towards the end of the piece it is as if the musicians surface from the depths of the ocean, back to the real world!
