Concerto for Trumpet (Score) Composed in 2023, the Concerto for trumpet and strings was commissioned by Dominique Bodart as a compulsory work for the final of the fourth Théo Charlier International Trumpet Competition 2024. The composer also realized a version for trumpet and piano. Structured in three movements, its writing calls for great technical virtuosity on the part of the performers, but this virtuosity is never an end in itself; it is solely at the service of musical expression. The developments are built on two essential elements: the gradual construction of various melodic and rhythmic cells that can be superimposed on each other, and the sudden changes in harmonic colour that constantly stimulate the listener’s attention. Michel Lysight’s style is rooted in the repetitive minimalism of composers such as Steve Reich, John Adams and Arvo Pärt, but with personal characteristics that make his language immediately identifiable. Careful orchestration is an integral part of his musical universe, with the orchestra -or piano- never seen as a mere accompanist but as the trumpeter’s partner. At several points, various soloists emerge from the ensemble to enter into dialogue with the trumpet, echoing the idea of a momentary Concerto Grosso. The world premiere took place on 2 March 2024 at the Grand Manège in Namur (Belgium), during the final of the Théo Charlier International Trumpet Competition, with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie conducted by Vahan Mardirossian.
