Sonata This work was composed as a result of several conversations I had with prominent trumpet players such as Chase Hawkins and Richard Stoelzel. It is agreed that there have been many good shorter works recently added to the solo trumpet repertoire. What seems to be lacking are newly composed larger and more sophisticated multi-movement works that can make up the body of a recital or CD program. Richard Stoelzel has included this work in a CD program entirely of newly composed sonatas for trumpet and piano. Chase Hawkins has premiere and recorded the Sonata as part of his Ph.D. studies in Cincinnati and there has also been much interest among other soloists such as Alex Wilson and John Irish. The Sonata consists of three very contrasting movements. While the genres of the three movements differ, the movements share a common harmonic device and strong thematic ideas.
