Steal Away (8Trp) (Spirituals, like folk songs, seem to lend themselves to all sorts of arrangements for varying combinations of timbres without losing their original charm and spirit. This arrangement is for 8 B flat trumpets, its style being prompted by the words of the chorus: “The trumpet sound within my soul, I ain’t got long to stay here.” It is a small gesture in memory of three trumpet playing colleagues who died in the space of a few months in 1999/2000: Chris Horn, Paul Ringham and Philip Jones. Performance notes: Play with a gentle and expressive style throughout. Even at the loud dynamics do not overblow.
