East to West Jazz Duets: Volume 3 The East 2 West Jazz duets were born on the District line of the London Underground network. My friends and I at the Royal College of Music were always looking for new material to play together, especially over the quieter summer months. After playing through all of the duet books in the college library, and stumbling on some simple jazzy duets, my good friend Sam challenged me to write some of our own. I came back the next day with two scribbled out on manuscript. After a quick enjoyable blast through we decided to try and challenge ourselves and this continued for a week, the advanced volume was then complete! Within a few months of trying them out with other players, I was encouraged to write some new and accessible duets for students. It was then really enjoyable creating Volume 1 and 2, inspired by my junior school students, the majority being Beginner to Grade 5 standard. I am now really glad to see my students and fellow teachers playing these fun duets together with the same enjoyment I had with my conservatoire friends. All of the duets in this series were sparked by a conversation, person or station in my immediate commuter surroundings. I hope more students and teachers will continue to enjoy these moments of madness!
