Warm-Ups for Trombone Choir - Volume Two - Octets (is appropriate for trombone players high school age and up. Looking for that "magic" sound that blends just the right balance and intonation in your trombone quartet or choir? Start each rehearsal with a few of these fun, short exercises that encompass a variety of harmonies, concepts, and styles! In 2005 I wanted to have some short exercises to play at the start of Trombone Choir rehearsal to get my students listening to one another so they could find the correct intonation, blend and balance. Standard chorales are fantastic for this but offer very little variety in style and harmony. I sketched three short exercises that I used with my group for several years, but I discovered that the older students had learned what these "felt" like and could replicate it very quickly. A good thing perhaps, but it also meant that we needed some new material to keep them on their toes. tychinski-ud-photo-edit.jpgBruce Tychinski is an assistant professor of trombone at the University of Delaware where he teaches applied lessons, directs the trombone choir and UD Slides jazz trombone ensemble and teaches low brass methods. Dr. Tychinski is a member of the Washington Trombone Ensemble, the Nittany Trombone Quartet, and is a prominent freelance trombonist in the Gulf Coast area. During his career, he has performed with orchestras, chamber groups, and jazz ensembles throughout the United States and also with many well-known popular artists including Rosemary Clooney, the Four Tops, Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Drifters, Leslie Gore, Lou Christie and Connie Francis. In recent years, Dr. Tychinski has appeared at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, International Trombone Festival, the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, and served on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. This summer he will appear at the International Trombone Festival and the International Horn Symposium. Dr. Tychinski led the Jack Stamp Trombone Commission Consortium that resulted in the composition Divertimento for Trombone and Band by Jack Stamp which he will premiere at the 2013 Eastern Trombone Workshop with the United States Army Band. A long-time advocate of trombone quartets and choirs, Dr. Tychinski can be heard on the Washington Trombone Ensembles CD "The Road Not Taken" and on "Christmas with the Nittany Trombone Quartet", for which he also contributed 10 arrangements. He has also been a member of the William Cramer Trombone Choir and led the Southern Miss Trombone Choir on a tour of Germany and a performance at the Eastern Trombone Workshop. His doctoral dissertation at the University of Kansas was An Annotated Guide to Trombone Choir Literature. Dr. Tychinski holds Bachelor and Master of Music in Trombone Performance degrees from Penn State University and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance degree from the University of Kansas. Prior to his appointment at the University of Delaware, Dr. Tychinski taught at the University of Southern Mississippi, St. Norbert College and the University of Northern Iowa. )
