Transmorgrify (8Pos) An original work that was commissioned as part of the Collegiate Commissions Project by Erik Shinn (University of Florida), Tony Baker (University of North Texas), David Begnoche (Texas Christian University), Per Brevig (The Juilliard School), Dennis Bubert (University of Texas-Arlington), Joshua Bynum (University of Georgia), Brad Edwards (Arizona State University), Bruce Faske (Arkansas State University), David Finlayson (Manhattan School of Music), Ben McIlwain (University of Southern Mississippi), John Neurohr (Central Washington University), Brent Phillips (Baylor University), Bruce Tychinski (University of Delaware), Noel Wallace (Hebron High School), Jonathan Whitaker (University of Alabama). For 4 tenors and 4 basses. Advanced in rhythm and ensemble skills. First part has optional high Ds (D5). Composition Note: Transmogrify: to change or alter greatly and often with grotesque or humorous effect. While no attempt was made to harmonically resemble the beautiful, stark main theme from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, the idea of simple dissonances swelling to contemplative silence inspired the beginning of this work. The entire piece grows out of the opening dissonant chords, and transforms through many guises, thus the title Transmogrify.
