Humboldt Currents, op. 174 for Brass Octet (A brisk allegro opens this work for eight brass instruments. Plenty of tuneful activity is provided for all players. A slow second movement calls for some muting of the instruments, lending a softer more subdued color. The final movement opens with a slow introduction followed by a rapidly moving main section, into which are introduced two original tunes in the style of “sea shanties.” By the end of the piece these two tunes have combined, bringing the work to a lively conclusion. parts included: Trumpet 1, 2, 3, Horn, Trombone 1, 2, 3, Tuba)
