Concerto (Neuheit Euphonium) This concerto is set in three movements with a somewhat eclectic mix of styles exploring tonal language of a lighter nature. The first movement is based on the strident calls of a blackbird in my garden and set in sonata form with rich chromaticism. The second movement is a chaconne featuring the upper register of the euphonium, reminiscent of Baroque concertos where the brass were required to sing on high harmonics. The finale is an energetic huapango dance. The work was premiered in its wind band format by David Childs and has been recorded by Steven Mead with the RAF Central Band.
