Lyric Sonata for trumpet and organ was written for the 2007 International Trumpet Guild. The premiere in May 2007 in Amherst, Massachusetts, featured the composer on trumpet and Douglas Major on organ. Its ethereal feel, achieved through haunting cadenzas and simple melodies, is enhanced by the use of the third valve slide with alternate fingerings, creating a trombone-like sliding effect not often heard in works for trumpet. Recorded and released on "The Lyrical Trumpet 2".
