Carnival of Venice Jules Levy (1838–1903), self-styled ‘King of Cornet Players’, was one its greatest exponents. He became infatuated with the cornet at an early age and at just 18 was invited by Dan Godfrey to join the band of the Grenadier Guards. His playing became the talk of London and he was in constant demand as a soloist. From 1864 he travelled widely and in 1876, when (according to the great Herbert Clarke) Levy was without equal, he appeared regularly with the renowned Gilmore Band, attracting thousands of people to his solo performances. Jules Levy’s variations on Carnival of Venice was originally for the now rarely found Cornet in A – this new edition for B-flat instruments makes it available to many more players.
