Surgite Surgite (414.01) (Neuheit Ensemble) Programme notes: Barbara Strozzi was an Italian singer and composer. Giulio Strozzi, her adoptive father, encouraged her musical talent and organised a society that allowed her to display her vocal talents. She was also a gifted composer, and studied with composer Francesco Cavalli. Several collections of her works were published in her lifetime. These were mainly secular vocal works but she also produced a set of sacred songs, the Sacri Musicali Affetti, published in 1655. This piece is edited and arranged from a cantata for solo soprano and continuo and is in the style of an instrumental sonata in several sections. Performance note: There are numerous editorial expression marks. These are a starting point and can be altered if desired at te discretion of the performers. Accents, tenuto marks, hairpins and commas are to suggest expressive phrasing and should not be over-exaggerated. Play in a vocal style.
