Man Buns & Beards (413.11.Drum Kit) Man Buns & Beards This piece features a number of contrasting sections loosely based on the ‘Township’ styles of South African music. With the piece written but still awaiting a title, I had to attend a parents evening at the local secondary for my younger son. It transpired that both the ‘Geography’ and ‘Religious Education’ appointments were to be held in the same room. Upon entering the room I was met with a fantastic wall display of all things ‘South African’ plus two hipster looking male teachers, each sporting a man bun and beard – the title of the piece was born ! Jock McKenzie Jock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music.
