Dancing Days - Variations on a Traditional (414.01.Perc.optional) English Christmas Melody Programme notes: Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day is probably from as early as the 14th Century. The tune has the characteristic 6/8 rhythm of the mediaeval English carol and the words tell the story of the life of Jesus with dance as a recurring symbolic gesture. This version sets each verse as a variation in a different dance style; after a verse of the original theme the variations begin with a Basse Dance and follow with a stately Gavotte, a Haydnesque Minuet, a virtuosic Czardas, a Viennese Waltz, a Ragtime, a Tango, a Rumba and a final variation in rock-style before concluding with a Fugue. Performance notes: Percussion is optional but desirable. Trumpet 1 may require a piccolo trumpet Trumpet 4 requires a flugel Characterise each variation in an obvious, possibly exaggerated manner to get the full contrasts between the styles.
